Description
In the early 1940s, Al and Bob Pelton opened a shop in Salt Lake City, Utah that sold potato-flour based doughnuts, adapting a recipe that Bob had picked up in Germany after spending some time as a baker for the United States Navy. They sold their nick-named “spudnuts” on the streets and door to door until the treat sparked a phenomenon of popularity.
By the late 1940s, there were over 200 spudnut shops across the country. Though the Pelton’s chain of spudnuts fell in popularity and success by the mid 1960s, Johnny O’s has been able to rein in that nostalgia surrounding the once-revolutionary potato doughnut and establish a new era of spudnut perfection.
