Event Details
This day before Christmas paddle showcases the scenic Jordan River water trail between Salt Lake City and North Salt Lake. This year we will do the stretch from the new Gadsby Trailhead in Salt Lake, and paddle north to Porter’s Landing in North Salt Lake for a 6.3-mile event, with the option to go 30 minutes further to see any eagles which might be nesting at the bird perch. It is estimated going out to the bird perch and then attaining back to Porter’s Landing will make this about an 8-mile paddle. This event will go regardless of the weather on the 24th – and if we are lucky the river corridor will be blanketed with a fresh coating of snow – making this an especially scenic paddle. We should be off the river by 3PM.
This is a Flat-Water event. In the past navigation hazards have included overhanging branches, limbs in the river, and debris on the water. Deer are sometimes seen on this stretch of river, and during warm weather paddles, the lead boater often observes turtles lounging on tree limbs just above the water’s surface.
Please check your equipment for serviceability and to ensure your boat is free of aquatic nuisance/invasive species. This activity is appropriate for the boaters who can supply their own equipment, and who can safely maneuver their boat in current to avoid river obstacles; boaters are responsible for their safety on the water. Everyone will need to wear a PFD for this event. Dress for the weather and bring boat snacks to enjoy on the river. Everyone is encouraged to bring a change of clothes in a dry bag in case of a swim. The water will be cold. Meet Elliott at Porter’s Landing in North Salt Lake at 10:30am.
Trailhead Directions: Drive Redwood Road to Center Street in the City of North Salt Lake and turn west. (There is a Maverik convenience store at this intersection.) Drive west on Center Street approximately one-mile to Jordan River Drive and turn south. Jordan River Drive is past the Legacy Highway overpass and on the west side of Legacy Preparatory Academy at approximately 1400 West. Porter’s Landing is a short distance south on Jordan River Drive on the right side of the road. From this location we will arrange a vehicle shuttle to the put-in site.
